TGT Merit List & Normalization Explained

Demystifying how HPRCA calculates final TGT ranks across Arts, Medical, and Non-Medical streams using shifting-difficulty formulas.

How the Final Merit is Generated

In the new HPRCA recruitment framework, the merit list is the definitive soul of teacher appointments. For TGT aspirants, the process has moved from an "Evaluation Model" (extra marks for BPL, sports, etc.) to a purely performance-based CBT (Computer Based Test) model.

Stages of Ranking

01

CBT Raw Scores

Your direct performance in the 200-question online exam. This is the foundation of your rank.

02

Multi-Shift Normalization

If the exam (like TGT Arts) spans 3-4 days, scores are mathematically normalized to compensate for easy/hard question papers.

03

Document Verification (DV)

HPRCA typically calls candidates in a 1:3 ratio based on the normalized merit list for physical verification.

The Normalization Factor

Normalization is often the most misunderstood part of the HP TGT merit process. It uses the standard deviation and mean score of the "Base Session" (the session with the highest average marks) to adjust scores of all other sessions.

Why Scores Change

If you appeared in a shift where the top-performing 0.1% of candidates scored lower than the top 0.1% of another shift, your shift is considered 'tougher', and your normalized score will likely increase significantly from your raw marks.

Category-Wise Selection Cutoffs

Merit isn't just about being first; it's about where you stand in your vertical and horizontal category. HP TGT mandates 7th Pay Level positions that are strictly allotted according to the state's 100-point roster.

  • Vertical Reservation: SC/ST/OBC/EWS and Unreserved categories.
  • Horizontal Reservation: Wards of Ex-Servicemen (WESM), Sports, and PWD.
  • Batch-wise Seniors: Special consideration for candidates who have stayed TET-qualified for over a decade.
